I wonder what one should say about the strike? You had
to have it, for it made your situations but I thought it
filled too much room ... We hardly that... it was too
interesting in itself and took me away too much from the
family. And Maureen was not significantly used. Lord, I
could go on thinking about the book at... for hours. You
realise that it's a boo... done.
A special word about the writing. It began perhaps
with labour: at least I noticed a discrete style, sentence
after sentence being simple, and independent. Then it warmed
to the job (or I did) and for the last 200 pages I galloped
right through, never hesitating nor particularly fitted
"to" the job. That was good, wasn't it?
I hope the thing will go well; had it been a trans-
lation from the German I ... would have been no doubt of it.
I was sorry you had to leave Boriswood, but you were right, if
only from the technical standpoint. An author TRO has gone
...and your friend, M... Pritchett and him. Chatto and
Windus (if they will stick by you) can "place" you better
than anyone. Marshall has just told me you are in a small
...... Every day. So be ... shooting that dry little bench
over Everard Street for serious work.
Please remember me to Mrs H. I hope she is fit!
And the child? Is he the Tim of the dedication? Also I
hope very much that your subsistence problem has got easier
with time. And here's a li... in me for a fuller TRO story
about that in about six months
hence. Meanwhile I'm very happy that you have done so big
a thing as this.
Yours

Don't let Chatto & W see this letter - not that they
would care! That's another benefit you gain from being
with a big firm.
