There is a slight memorandum about the Clarendon Press, & I shrink from the task of educating them suddenly. The difficulty of a subscription edition is how many to print, & what to do with the materials left over (plates etc.). I for one reason I would rather be indebted to one than to many. I am turning over in my mind the ... arbitrarment ... to publish Garnett's abridgement (approved by Hogarth) as to the subscription edition there is no profit.
