To Hogarth 21.1.24 A prolonged time without writing:- but there has been (and is) nothing to say. The Xmas spectacle of camp. took out of me the zest I had won in Oxford. Paragraph cut out Arnie is now in the States (Boston, Philadelphia New York, apparently) on his way to England, which he will reach next month. Subscribers are themselves silently: to my list:- about 15 now.- Whittingham & Griggs are completing the first four chromo-lithos: and Pike (the suggested printer) is preparing me specimen pages. These will be sent you on (completion, deleted) receipt, about a fortnight hence. Any progress with John? He is willing & anxious to try again. I only hope he will achieve another drawing as great. Shaw (the genuine one) was here lately: full of quietnesses upon the supposed oddity of my position in camp (now absolutely normal, though I haven't been able to make myself like the rest in mind or manner).
