To Ishma, 10. viii. 27. My father's name (& therefore mine) was neither Shaw nor Lawrence, but the other day I adopted Shaw as my legal name. So it will be that till further notice. It is a short simple name, easily pronounced and spelt. There, in answering your letter I have written mine. It is exceedingly good of you to want to help me so much, and it is not hesitate to take advantage of it if my sense of fitness would allow me to profit by you. But experience has taught me that a will invariably turn down every job I'm given the chance of getting - the truth being, I fancy, that the service has become a second nature to me, and that I'll feel lost if (or when) it chucks me out. My regards to Mrs Ishma, the incognita. Please tell her that she must refrain my visiting ... her hut after 1939, if ever you come to London (and all good ... do) then we will be able to see each other. Let's hope for that.
