Iraqi Marsh Interviews – Fisherman

This interview was conducted with a fisherman in the town of Al Chibayish. The interview discusses topics such as the lack of water in the marshes, the changes in the type of fish that live in the marshes, the importation of fish from Egypt, the length of time they spend fishing, the difficulties finding work, the average price of fish they sell and where it is sold, the cost of fuel, the methods they employ to fish, hunting birds, their views of tourists who visit the marshes, and their experiences during the regime of Saddam Hussein. The fisherman also discusses his memories of growing up in the marshes before they were drained, the importance of education, their views of life in the city and the marshes, and the nature of interactions with local government.
