Dear Wavell
I can’t come this week-end :- we have to put in our passes on Wednesday to get off:- and I am not sure about next. There is probably a duty for me on Sunday next week. However, I shall no doubt know ; and your letter in the post will probably tell me how long you are staying out on the plain. It’s very good of you to wire, and I’m only dashing this off to get you on Saturday and assure you that it won’t be this week.
Do you know a man called Liddell-Hart? He has just written rather an interesting thesis on “indirect approach”, tracing historically over 20 campaigns from Marathon to Mons. Rather worth reading, I fancy.
Thesis only: to prove something ; and I could prove the opposite : only, actually, he has xxr taken the better, and rarer side, I fancy.
Yours
T.E.Shaw
The hesitation over ranks & decorations persists into this envelope: too.
