To Mrs. Fontana, Anamoon, Breading, i.e.w.
W.O. 4.
War Office
Whitehall - W.
4 Dec 14 (from postmark)
Dear Mrs Fontana
I wonder if you have any news of Mr Fontana? He got
to Egypt, I heard, & I know nothing more. Will you
send me where, if any, he carried away to Aleppo for
silver, a rug, and books for which he deserves ever-
lasting thanks. I wonder what has happened to the
Consulate. It has been searched I know, but apparently
the viols etc. were not found; should like to know
about it.
Further early in October Mr Fontana was making efforts
to have the Military service of our head men carried out
on the Dig. as guards. I wonder if he got this through,
before he left. I hope the men will carry off everything
from the house before any Turk can sack it. It would
relieve me if any Turk shot me with my own revolver.
However I asked Haj Wahid & Dahoum to see to things. Between
them they can dispose of all things cunningly in the village.
Woolley goes E. with me: at least he leaves on Saturday
P. & O.: and Newcombe, (who salutes you) and I, leave
on Tuesday going overland. I have been up here for a
couple of months overseeing Sinai maps being drawn, &
writing Sinai reports. Now it's Cairo. All goes well,
except among the Turks. Are there any commissions I can
do for you in Aleppo next spring?
Salaam me to Beasts,' and report by wire if Beasts hateth
me more, or Dandini. What befell him, by the way?
E.I.
