Enclosed with letter of 27.1'.1912 Downstairs Hilltie. The distinctive wares of this are not found on top of the mound (with stray exceptions). i. Pebble-polished wares, red,yellow and buff: no very distinct forms: no black. ii. Highly-burnished wares, with thin lines of polish, horizontal, evidently done on the pot by a sharp-pointed polishing instrument; this work on the inside was a bout 1/3 of an inch broad, but sometimes 1/8: in red and black. Two pieces of this come from the foundations of the "building" of the lion-pedestal in the N.W. Out. Also a place in the court-pit, resting on a rude-ringd. line line head remains of it: they were with a bronze fibula. iii. ... in red, yellow, and green, rough heavy clay, incised in patterns and sunk & washed with a comb of from 5 to 8 teeth. This ware is found deep down below the floor of the stair-palace. iv. The last ware: aemi-greek shapes in dark red and yellow, painted in pale reddish-brown (approaching): this is the ware of the stair-palace and found nowhere else. Are decorated with a pattern on red slip: a vine-tendril pattern incised through an ichy ... red white, and bunches of 5 grapes fully light & thin.
