To Hogarth Carchemish June 14 (1913) I wrote to Leeds this afternoon, and thought it enough, but per- haps I'd better write to you as well. We got your letter of Joy about the acquisitions or the fall of Aintab: inc[luding] the gifts gate. They are splendid, aren't they. For the photographs are very un- satisfactory so far as making them appear good. The carving on the capitals is very soft, and delicate, and marking a quite dif- ...t period, from those at Jerablus. A little hard: the children are hasty, and very well done. The slab of chariot, too, a grand piece also very fine: and there is probably quite a good bit more to time "Inscriptions". Woolley has probably told you of the clearing of the cemetery. In a way it was a d...ointment, as being of the cremation time. We got ... splendid spoils: and some nice dritish [pot]ters were good pottery. But I should think it was all post Sargon: running down from him to "Mushkenu-zer, who may have smashed the whole city up... It seems to me so like Deve Huyuk in many respects. Of course we have in a way confused Dev[r]huyuk, since there are obviously two periods there much mixed up. Woolley says that the later one (which held Greek painted pottery) must be about 600BC, and later and that little pottery, and again in cremated burials. The later cemetery had ...dy burials exclusively. You obviously think the whole thing quite good - I don't know for mine, certa... on the brick material, about which I know less than nothing. I'm sorry you didn't like my last lot of seals, those from Maroc- poli. Let's says they arrived without documentation, but I ex- pect that has been set right. And almost sure they are all genu- ine: and I thought th... rather a nice set. After ... three of them are inscribed specimens, and the cylinder (dated, as it may be in a shortened letter "H.S.") is very fine indeed that I have ever come across. I'm rather wild at having quite so much for them since they ran me up to your approp[ria]tion you are short this year. I'm going for a little run down into the Abu Qalgal district this next week. It doesn't my scale of Comfat will ppy them, but one doesn't usually make much [profit] out of visiting villages oneself - unless one finds a "tell farmer. I think I had better not buy anything else in Aleppo this season, unless it is a meeting quite necessary to you. In any case, make sure that I've together, you have got very good ones from me this year, though very dear also. But when I do come across a very fine one, I feel an obligation to let it go. I'd much rather give it you half price? You recommend selectiveness in buying...for a long time I have ... not been buying ... of the seals offered to me: only if I thought they were very good, or had something not quite ...lar in their shape or design.
