To W. B. Jeffrey (at last,
after he had announced his return to England)
13 Birmingham St
Southampton
2 May 1834
My blessed Bones
Cortes (really Flaxman) has been in the Midlands for
ever so long, but for two hurried dashes to Clouds Hill,
to survey his Public Works. And on those two days he could
not succeed your coming, as there was a tenant living in
the cottage.
Next Sunday I hope to be there, from about 10.30 a.m.
till 5 p.m. Doing nothing in particular; no food; no
drink - except water and bread, which incidentally are good
food and good drink.
If it is fine....would you like to come? Both of you?
If it is really fine. Don't ride all that way in the wet
to see a burnt squib of a man. It would make me feel
guilty. But on a fine day the walk (I usually go via Gallows
Hill & return via Bovington) is as good as any in England.
If these boats delay me here, I will send a wire on
Saturday, warning you off!
Yours
T E S.
