Rythe.
4th May, 1931.
Flight Lieutenant Beauforte-Greenwood.
Mr. Scott-Paine's fitter, with Corporal Bradbury, this evening got the Perry engine in one of the dinghies to run perfectly at all speeds, from tick-over to full throttle. I am sending you this information urgently, an will not render you any formal report upon the tuning or the engine unless you ask for it later.
What was done was to cut down the water supply to 9/34" from the existing 3" inlet. The jets were left as before, but the choke of 21/26 was removed and replaced by a 20/25, th next smaller size, and the angle of the carburettor was altered towards the horizontal at the boat's angle when under way by packing the inlet flange with a tapered washer (made temporarily from wood) to feed more petrol into the jets. At the same time the starting handle dog was re-set to allow of a pull-up when swining to start, and the throttle and magneto control levers were adjusted, to open and close properly together.
If similar alterations are made to tune the other dinghy engines, I consider that their running will be as good as this first one. Their carrying-out will be quite a simple matter, henceforward.
