Dear F/Lt. Norrington
Would this do ? For A.M.O. (E)
Marine Craft. Power 100 h.p. Engine.
Gudgeon-pin fixing.
A batch of defective bolts, gudgeon-pin clamping
(Section 13 N Reference 29 7) have been issued by
makers. Their defect is that the thread has not V
been cut far enough down the shank for the head
of the bolt to clamp the split end of the con-rod
before bottoming. This allows the slot in the con
rrod to work slightly upon each detonation, with
the risk of its splitting downward along the centre
Of the web. Engine failures have been noted due
to this cause.
Units are to examine all these 5⁄8" clamping
bolts held as spare in Stores, and to rectify any
that are defective, by extending the thread.
Bolts of this batch may have been used in
engines, of serial numbers earlier than 7850 (July
1935). Units are to examine their engines upon this
point, during the next top or complete overhaul,
and make an entry in the log book when done.
