"Hector Munro is a name like a grand flourish, and
he should do your job with a clang. Good. I am all
in bits, bruised inside and out, and on earth there is not
a man less military, less qualified to appreciate the
strength and force of your monument. I am going to
see it next week end, if I possibly can; but in truth
I feel bullied just now, and when dismissed I like to
slink just a few yards into the nearest patch of fern
and hide there. ...........
Will you please turn the second officer from the
left into a Major or Lieut. Cplpsel? He
has only one pip now, and deserves more. It would be
done on the block with a scratch of a greasy pen."
