Now what am I to call you? “My dear Li” you say:
“My dear General”. But have you recognised the inevitable yet, with you? Or are you an amorphous
brigadier? – God knows: and Dawnay, but he is broadcasting now.
So I leave the heading blank, and look again at
your letter, to see that I reply too late. You are
training now. “Liddell Hart Sold me yours was the only
brigade in the army that could be called trained: I
trained in useful ways, I mean – and I argued his cor
rect. The old men will give you a black mark for betraying their boyhood habits. You will never become
C.G.S.: that’s left to become C.G.S. you have to live to
70, and look it.
Hythe: yes, last week I began there again – on the
26th to be exact: and I shall be there almost daily
for six weeks: not boat-testing, but surveying boats
under construction, and checking their engines during
their test-bed runs. Interesting work; upon which the
goodness of this batch of boats depends. If you can,
do come and look. Hythe is on the Worborough or South
ampton Water, and the yard is the British Power Boat Co.
ask for Aircraftsman Shaw: and if possible give notice
of your coming. I will have word that General Lascelles
is to be shown all possible courtesy, which is not by
any means an unnecessary repetition, with the D.P.B.Co!
Yours
T.E.Shaw.
