The Repertory Theatre, Birmingham.] Union Jack Club, 91 Waterloo Road, London S.W.1. ..IX..12 Dear Mr Wood Ayliff told me you knew I had been with G.B.S. to see "Too O.de" last Thursday, and that must be my excuse for writing. As you can imagine, the first seeing was rather an occasion for me. The part you play is obviously a bit at me, and I felt very nervous, until all was over, lest something in it should hurt. Actually I thoroughly enjoyed it - or rather I should say by that I hope to come one night in London an. see it again, for enjoyment's sake. That first time my stomach felt a bit hollow all through. I thought you did the part admirably. You looked decent (I am always as correct as I can be, regimentally speaking) and I only wish nature had let me look half as smart and efficient as yourself. Only I get more raiety out of my position. It's comic really, and I often see that, whereas you looked grim. I hope you find the part a comfortable one. Acting and plays aren't much in my line - I thought G.B.S. had really given you some pretty good chances, which you fully took. The house wriggle with delight over some of your quips and business. If you want a long run in the part I hope you get it; or are long runs long boredoms? Don't answer this; in fact you can't, for
